Teoksen kuvaus

Tämä teos on kunnianosoitus DJ:lle, jollaisena olemisesta Kelmin Lumolla on itselläänkin pitkä kokemus.

DJ:n kulmikkaat vaatteet, liioitellun väljä vyö ja itsekseen liikkuvat hupparin ja kengännauhat tekevät hahmosta sarjakuvamaisen. Kaikki on liikkeessä, niin myös battle-tyyliin asetettujen levareiden äänivarret, jotka näyttävät elävän omaa elämäänsä.

Spraymaalattu tausta hengittää hip hopin estetiikkaa: graffitin, liikkeen ja soundin maailmaa. Värien pyörre vetää katseen sisäänsä, ja DJ:n takana lukee graffitikirjaimin ”Scratch”.

Teos kantaa mukanaan myös menneitä kerroksia. Alakulmasta paljastuva värikäs pohjamaalaus näyttää, että pinnan alla on muutakin. Se tekee näkyväksi luomisen prosessin, sillä tälle puulevylle on ollut alunperin tarkoitus maalata jotain muuta, ja Kelmin Lumo päätti jättää siitä pienen alueen näkyville.

Artwork description

This work is a tribute to the DJ, a role Kelmin Lumo knows well from personal experience.

The DJ’s angular clothing, exaggeratedly loose belt, and self-moving hoodie and shoelaces give the figure a comic-like look. Everything is in motion, even the tonearms of the battle-positioned turntables seem to have a life of their own.

The spray-painted background breathes hip-hop aesthetics: the world of graffiti, movement, and sound. The whirl of colors draws the viewer in, and behind the DJ, the word ”Scratch” appears in graffiti lettering.

The artwork also carries its past layers. From the lower corner, a colorful underpainting emerges, revealing that there is always something beneath the surface. It makes the creative process visible, as this wooden panel was originally meant for some other painting, and Kelmin Lumo chose to leave a small part of it uncovered.
