Tags Are Ugly tutkii kaksinaismoralismia graffitikulttuuria arvosteltaessa.

Spraymaalipurkki repeytyy, kun teksti ”TAGS ARE UGLY” leikkaa sen kyljen auki kuin ammuttuna paljastaen vaaleat hampaat ja näin korostaen inhimillisyyttä arvostelun kohteen takana.

Tämä haastaa katsojaa pohtimaan, miksi tietyt ilmaisumuodot katukuvassa hyväksytään ja toisia kritisoidaan.

Teos muistuttaa, että monien mielestä ”rumat tagit” ja ”kauniit graffitit” kulkevat käsi kädessä: ne ovat alkujaan osa samaa urbaania kulttuuria, samasta purkista. Toinen ei voi olla olemassa ilman toista.

Tags Are Ugly examines the double standards often applied when evaluating graffiti culture.

The spray paint can appears to tear open as the text ”TAGS ARE UGLY” slices through its side, revealing pale teeth and highlighting the humanity behind the criticized subject.

The work challenges the viewer to consider why certain forms of expression in the urban landscape are accepted while others are condemned.

It reminds us that what many see as ”ugly tags” and ”beautiful graffiti” go hand in hand: they originate from the same urban culture, from the same can. One cannot exist without the other.
